Privacy

Hi Everyone,

Today, I'm going to talk about the issue of privacy and the relationship between privacy and new media.

As you know, privacy issues are always behind new media. Since a lot of marketers depend on electronic data and computer networks, consumers' privacy is violated. I did a research about this issue for my term paper and I quote some facts from my paper below.

According to Insurance Information Institute, about $16 billion was stolen from 15.4 million U.S. consumers in 2016. Moreover, the Pew Research Center summarizes that about 21 % of Internet users (survey participants) have had an e-mail or social networking service accounts taken over by someone. 11% of them have had an experience when they had their important information stolen such as their Social Security Number, credit card, or bank account information. Privacy invasion is no longer a rare issue! You cannot underestimate this problem...

In recent years, the number of credit card frauds has increased and many retail stores pay attention to this issue.

In order to avoid this case, credit card with a microchip is one of the helpful ways to protect consumers' privacy. According to an article on CNET, Target offers credit card users to use a chip enabled credit card. Target is one of the example that have struggle with customers' credit card frauds. The tiny microprocessor chip makes it more difficult for cyber criminals to access users' data. This system is very effective because credit card fraud has fallen by 72% between 2008 and 2012 in Canada. This is a great number!

I do not care that I purchase something online, but I do have to be careful about my privacy violation. Thieves can do more than I expect, so I have to keep it in mind...
Also, some stores still do not allow users to use credit cards with a chip, so I hope this system will become more popular everywhere in near future.
