Wiki So Far

Hello Everyone,

I am going to talk about my college Wiki page.
One of my projects in this class is creating/adding contents on college wiki pages.

I haven't added anything yet, but I would like to improve the "Fashion" page.

First, I will explain the structure of the fashion industry.  There are five levels in the fashion industry, which are Mill level, Apparel Manufacturing level, Distribution level, Retail level, and Consumers level.

  1. Mill level: Textiles (fabrics, zippers, trims, and buttons) and finding manufacturers.
  2. Apparel Manufacturing level: Marketing, merchandising, and production. There are two types of production, which are to "perform manufacturing within own facilities and employees" or to contact some or all of the manufacturing functions to other firms.
  3. Distribution level: Multiple global layers of distribution through brokers
  4. Retail level: Selling clothing to the consumer. There are seven formats of garment retailing (I will describe each format and some examples of retailers in Wiki)
    • Catalog Retailers
    • Department Store Retailers
    • Internet Retailers
    • Mass Retailers
    • Specialty Retailers
    • Ware House/Wholesale clubs
    • Retailer Outlets
  5. Consumers level: Decisions at all levels are based on forecasts of consumer demand.

Second, in order to let people know the world of fashion industry, I will explain the different categories of styles in fashion. According to a website called Noubikko, there are 8 categories: Haute (high fashion), Elegant, Dramatic (theatrical), Classic, Conservative, Western, Casual, Grunge, and Futuristic.
I will also describe their feature such as example brands, color, lines, texture, and effects. For example, Elegant style prefers to unusual and muted solid colors like gray, black and white. Dramatic style provides consumers some images such as confident, chic, sexy, and catchy.

Third, I also want to describe the relationship between fashion industry and new media. Since social networking service have been permeated, the strategy of fashion marketing are changing to depend on social media. I will introduce some successful fashion marketing strategies via social media. I also describe some examples of fashion brands which use social media wisely and how they utilize social media to improve their brands.
  1. TOPSHOP: Twitter
  2. Dior J'Adore: YouTube
  3. Nike: Instagram
  4. Banana Republic: Facebook
  5. Gap: Groupon
  6. Adidas: Cross Platforms (Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Tumblr, Facebook, Google+)

This is what I have researched so far.
I hope readers will get more information about fashion through that Wiki page that I edit!

P2P

Hey Everyone,
Today's topic is P2P file sharing, which I think that a lot of people are now familiar with.

I often utilize a file sharing service for group assignment or presentation at college.
For example, Google Drive was very useful to prepare presentation efficiently with my group last semester. One of the group members uploads a file and share it with rest of members on Google Drive. Since each member has a busy schedule, it is difficult to meet up and prepare for the presentation together. Then, the file sharing system makes it possible for us to share information and to create ppt whenever we have time.

Next, what is "P2P" file sharing? (Just in case, P2P stands for "Peer-to-Peer!") One of the most successful programs would be BitTorrent, which Bram Cohen created. A person uploads any file like TV shows or movies as a "torrent," and anyone can download the file from the person's place (torrent). When you miss an episode, you go to Torrent and will find what you want!
BitTorrent makes it much faster for users to upload and download enormous amounts of data. According to an article called "The BitTorrent Effect," more than 20 million people have downloaded the application.

I have heard of Winny, which is a Japanese P2P file sharing program. However, a developer of Winny, Isamu Kaneko, was arrested for suspected conspiracy to commit copyright violation in 2004. These kinds of service is very sensitive to law and developers cannot avoid issues such as pirate and copyright violation from other industries.

I also think that subscription video on demand service such as Netflix and Hulu is a great strategy to let users leave illegal-ish activities. They provides various videos like TV shows, cartoons, and films with reasonable monthly pay. Consumers just need reasonable and satisfactory service, so why not leave for these service?
I used Torrent a couple times, but now I am a fan of Netflix ;)

See you in a next blog!

Advice

Hello Everyone,

Today's topic is that how I can improve Baruch College by suing new media.
I do not really know about Baruch College... but there is one great program that some famous universities have already carried on.

I would recommend that Open Course Ware (OCW) which is "Free" online materials of entire courses by select universities. This system provides students a free digital publication with high quality educational materials. Some universities adopt this service such as MIT, UC Berkeley, Harvard, and so on. This is not only in the U.S but also in Europe, Asia, and Middle East.
I came from Japan and this system is well-known by many big universities, both private and public universities.

The great target would be self-learners to manage their study and work. Unfortunately, if you complete the course, you will not be able to receive a formal credit at the university that you participate. The theme of OCW is not to provide credit for free, but to provide an opportunity to receive college-level education. However, this is still an attractive attitude for many learners.

Baruch College is well-known as a good business school in NYC. Therefore, they may be able to provide some business classes via OCW. Many students and adults who do not have a degree want to get into business school, and this would be one of the great promotion to let more people know about the academic program at Baruch College and let them be more interested in the College.

I am not sure that this is a good advice... but I am definitely interested in OCW program and many people may desire this course at Baruch College!

Privacy

Hi Everyone,

Today, I'm going to talk about the issue of privacy and the relationship between privacy and new media.

As you know, privacy issues are always behind new media. Since a lot of marketers depend on electronic data and computer networks, consumers' privacy is violated. I did a research about this issue for my term paper and I quote some facts from my paper below.

According to Insurance Information Institute, about $16 billion was stolen from 15.4 million U.S. consumers in 2016. Moreover, the Pew Research Center summarizes that about 21 % of Internet users (survey participants) have had an e-mail or social networking service accounts taken over by someone. 11% of them have had an experience when they had their important information stolen such as their Social Security Number, credit card, or bank account information. Privacy invasion is no longer a rare issue! You cannot underestimate this problem...

In recent years, the number of credit card frauds has increased and many retail stores pay attention to this issue.

In order to avoid this case, credit card with a microchip is one of the helpful ways to protect consumers' privacy. According to an article on CNET, Target offers credit card users to use a chip enabled credit card. Target is one of the example that have struggle with customers' credit card frauds. The tiny microprocessor chip makes it more difficult for cyber criminals to access users' data. This system is very effective because credit card fraud has fallen by 72% between 2008 and 2012 in Canada. This is a great number!

I do not care that I purchase something online, but I do have to be careful about my privacy violation. Thieves can do more than I expect, so I have to keep it in mind...
Also, some stores still do not allow users to use credit cards with a chip, so I hope this system will become more popular everywhere in near future.
